5/14/10 Sub Assignment:

Andrea Goulet wrote a blog post about which media tools are worth your time. Read through her list of tools and explanations and find a new media tool that you are not very familiar with. Then, spend the rest of class looking into that tool.
  • Do they have a demonstration video that you can watch?
  • Is their a "how to" video on the web about that program?
  • What do other blogs say about the tool?
  • Have you ever heard of others using this tool/
  • Do you think the tool is productive? Will it last?
  • What ideas can you think of on how this could be useful? What would people use it for?

NOTE Each one of you needs to try and pick a different media tool. Stay away from RSS since we will be looking more at this next week.

If you are researching the new media tool the entire class period, your assignment will be to report back to be about the tool on Monday. However, if you finish early your assignment is to write a review based on the above questions on your blog. Daily points are given based on the substitutes report of how on-task you were for the ENTIRE class period.

5/6/10

Find a new media trend/tool (ex. ipad) and write a review of the gadget on Elective Chatter. Find out as much information as you can about the background of the product (where did the idea come from, when did the first one come on the market, how is the supply/demand, who makes the product, current sale data, projected growth, etc.), and then find out what others are saying about the product (look on consumer review sites, other blogs, etc.). Open your review up for others' questions, comments, and discussions.

If you finish early, starting writing a commercial dialog for the product. This could be in a sales format or a "try it before you buy it" format. Be creative and specific. (Who are the actors? Where does the commercial take place? What are the camera angles? What props will you need?)

  • Gather some research and information about the site and post a brief summary on your blog.

  • Then, find some examples of "smart" people who have fallen into the trap on a social networking site. Why would this be a bad idea? Can you locate where people are right now? Have you ever done this yourself?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Google Week:

Your task for the week is to explore the many tools that google has created and compose a "Google Portfolio". You're portfolio should include sample work created on a variety of google sites. It can also include a list of programs you did not know about and ideas of how you might use that particular google tool. You can have fun with these programs and create tools you may actually use instead of simply qualifications to meet the assignment (example: google calendar). See the in class handout for the list of google sites to explore.

You may not upload, embed, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any material that infringes any copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary rights of any person or entity. It is MySpace’s policy to terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the membership of repeat infringers.

A man named Christopher B. Skvarka wrote about copyright laws on the Internet at the website mentioned above. He said that many people believe that if the copyright symbol isn't on a website then it isn't copyrighted. Christopher said that this actually isn't true. The only time that someone can copy something off of the Internet without giving the creator credit is if the website says “I grant this to the public domain”. He says that you should always ask for permission to use their work and that this usually gets a “yes” answer.

http://www.blogger.com/terms.g

Blogger.com has rules that users must agree to before they can make a blog on their website. Blogger says that users are responsible for any blog that they create and must accept any consequences if they break any rules. If a user breaks a rule they could lose their account on Blogger, and they can also suffer punishments that are given by the state and other legal punishments They have to be at least 13 years old to make a blog. Google owns everything on the blog.

MS

In short, according to this statement from Myspace all official copyright laws apply on the sight and will be inforced. If you are caught repeatedly breaking these terms of use, your count may be deleted for good. Myspace respects the intellectual and artistic rights of it's users so those that do not obey will be expelled from the network. Myspace gives specific instructions on how to report copyright infringement which is quite helpful in stopping unlawful posts and such.
